  2.     How then does anybody ever 
  3. manage to draw properly? One 
  4. answer is that we are taught or 
  5. teach ourselves. There is of 
  6. course much truth in this. 
  7. Leonardo taught the principles 
  8. of perspective and methods for 
  9. their utilization to his 
  10. disciples, and art teachers have 
  11. been doing the same ever since. 
  12. We also pick up a good deal of 
  13. information about the geometry 
  14. of perspective informally, 
  15. through trial and error and by 
  16. looking at pictures.
  17.  
  18.     But another answer may be 
  19. more important. There is a way 
  20. in which we do perceive in 
  21. accord with the two-
  22. dimensional characteristics of 
  23. the retinal image, which I 
  24. referred to earlier as 
  25. perception in the proximal 
  26. mode. We do perceive railroad 
  27. tracks and roads as converging, 
  28. for instance, even while we 
  29. perceive them as parallel, and 
  30. we do perceive plates on a table 
  31. as "elliptical," even while 
  32. perceiving them as circular. 
  33. Although constancy is our 
  34. dominant mode of perception, 
  35. the presence of the proximal 
  36. mode, or the potential to focus 
  37. on it, may play a major role in 
  38. drawing. When faced with the 
  39. task of drawing a road, for 
  40. example, the presence of the 
  41. proximal mode allows us to copy 
  42. the percept in which the sides 
  43. of the road converge rather 
  44. than the usually dominant 
  45. percept in which they are 
  46. parallel.
